What the Seventh Graders Are Learning

We just started a unit studying Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. We are learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his painting techniques. He only sold one painting in his lifetime. He used thick paint (a method known as impasto) and used short brushstrokes. Sometimes he used a pallette knife instead of a brush in order to apply the paint thickly. What is that technique called when paint is applied thickly to add texture to a painting?

Contrast the directions of the brushstrokes he used in order to define the surfaces- for example, round vs. flat.

Look at the movement that is shown by using the brushstrokes.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to give you an overview about what we'll be doing in Precal for the week of 9/7 to 9/10. We'll finish up with Section 1.7 in our books around Wednesday. If time permits, we'll go into Section 1.3. On Thursday, they will have a review day for their test Friday. I will put each class in groups of two and they will work on their review sheet. On Friday, they will have their test on material from Sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.7. If there are any questions about anything, feel free to let me know.

On our trip to the river we rotated through four stations. The first station was a presentation by a representative from Duke Power who told us about how the river was used to generate electricity. We then went on a nature hike with the park ranger who told us about many plants and animals who live near the river. After our picnic lunch we went back down to the river to check out some of the animals that call the river their home and to talk about more of the plants that live along the river bank. We finished up with a nature scavenger hunt, and some time on the play ground. We had a great time!

Upcoming unit

Our desert unit is quickly coming to a close. Our projects, which consist of a diorama and at least a one-page report, are due on Friday, Sept. 10. The students will "present" their projects on Friday and Monday. The "presentations" will consist of telling the class about an interesting or unusual fact(s) about the desert they selected and displaying their diorama for all to see.

On Monday, we will review in addition to the presentations, and on Tuesday, we will take the final test on the desert unit.

Next Wednesday, we will begin a unit on Judaism and Christianity. Be on the watch for more information about that. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at dtrimble@tjca.org

Playground Update

Soon a fence will be in place around the designated playground area and "phase 1" equipment will be ordered.
